Not easily defined, Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has accumulated a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures- a BB show will take audiences on a ride through love songs, murder ballads and deeply moving, relatable themes. The most commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be, “that was a spiritual experience.”
Barnaby Bright received the grand prize at NYC’s prestigious Songwriter’s Circle, were elected to Amazon’s Top 100 Albums of the Year, and most recently their Christmas album was picked by the New York Times as one of the Top 20 Christmas Albums of the Year, with 5 of the songs being featured in the Netflix hit TV show, Sex/Life.
An artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer, the Swainsboro, Georgia native began to fully come into her own with her 2017 record, the critically acclaimed Lucky Strike. Hailed as a “sublime distilling of Southern grit” by NPR, the album dipped its toes into a kind of radical honesty that Bragg had only previously hinted at, which she then committed further to for her self-titled album, Mary Bragg, released in 2022. Covering heartbreak, grief, and self-actualization, Mary Bragg depicts themes centered around the life tenets most important to her – love, kindness, and honesty. No Depression called it a “personal and powerful set featuring a courageous plumb line;” Americana Highways hailed, “Mary Bragg levels up as songwriter and producer,” while Folk Alley said her “exquisite vocal performances convey her struggles and triumphs with both intimacy and vulnerability. As we listen, we live her pain alongside her. We feel with her the tentativeness of moving forward, acknowledging regret, and grasping hope.”
